This prized NASA photograph, personally signed by all crew members, holds special dedication to 'Terry Treadwell'.
On August 30th, 1984, the crew of STS-41-D geared up for the inaugural launch of NASA's newest space shuttle, 'Discovery'. Serving as NASA's third orbiter, Discovery held significant promise for space exploration.
The crew included (Seated left to right): Richard M (Mike) Mullane, mission specialist; Steven A. Hawley, mission specialist; Henry W. Hartsfield, Commander; and Michael L (Mike) Coats, pilot. Standing at the rear were Charles D. Walker, payload specialist; and Judith A. (Judy) Resnik, mission specialist.
Discovery weighed nearly 7,000 lbs less than Columbia, showcasing advancements in shuttle technology. Remarkably, this marked the fourth time the crew, under the leadership of Commander Henry W. Hartsfield Jr., had boarded Discovery, overcoming technical challenges along the way.
The crew embarked on a six-day mission, deploying a then-record three satellites, conducting vital scientific experiments, and even responding to a mysterious knocking on the payload bay doors while the shuttle orbited 184 miles above Earth! STS-41-D concluded its journey on September 5th, 1984, with a safe landing at Edwards Air Force Base.
